What To Do When a Client Mentions Suicide

CCEU: 1.0 Ethics Core Competency

Suicide is a topic no one likes to discuss. Yet discussing it is very needed. There is a real possibility that someone will reach out to their coach for help for themselves or – more likely – for someone else. This presentation will give you the basics you need for such a conversation. Coaches listen well, ask powerful questions, and help the client formulate an action plan. A layman’s suicide intervention is very similar. The only difference is the action plan becomes a safety plan.

Breaching confidentiality is sometimes necessary when a client threatens harm – either to themselves or someone else. This webinar will center on the actions a coach can take when the red flags go up and provide ample time for Q & A to address relevant concerns.

Learning points:

  1. Becoming sensitive to some of the signs of someone who may be considering self-harm;
  2. Learning how to engage in a productive discussion about the topic of suicide/harm, rather than avoiding the topic; and,
  3. Knowing what community resources are available for suicidal individuals, such as local mental health professionals, emergency clinics, and suicide hotlines.
