"See" what I mean? Using visual tools to add a new dimension to coaching conversations

        CCEU: 1.0 Core Competency

From cavemen to cartoonists, human beings have understood the power of simple images to communicate big ideas.  Each of us uses images to communicate every day; we text a photo to a friend, create a chart for a presentation, or draw a map on a napkin.  We understand that using visual images allows us to communicate complex ideas quickly, compactly, and often without a language barrier.

Using sketches is another way of reflecting, summarizing, and bringing to life important coaching communications.  Drawing images, metaphors and analogies allows the coach and client to co-create awareness and understanding.  Our brains see patterns and make meaning from visual input within milliseconds; we often “see” what we mean before we can say what we mean.  The result is greater awareness and insight into a topic which enables transformation.  Clients often keep the visual notes as reminders and cues to turn their insights into actions.

In this workshop we will explore and practice several ways to incorporate images and visual elements into our coaching practice.

        The program includes:

        • an overview of visual coaching
        • practice of basic drawing elements and templates that are relevant to coaching
        • a coaching demonstration

Employing visual tools in our coaching can increase our range and proficiency in core coaching competencies as well.

        For example:

        • Foundation: Coaching ethics and mindset are integrated into the visual coaching process.
        • Co-creating the relationship: The coach facilitates establishing and maintaining agreements assisting clients as they gain a clear visual representation of present state, ideal future state, milestones and potential barriers. Trust and safety are cultivated as the client drives the experience. Coaching facilitates safe, supportive, and creative collaborative partnership. The coach maintains full presence with client throughout this coaching process both in the traditional sense and as together coach and client “see” what they mean.
        • Communicates effectively: The coach communicates effectively by actively listening and evoking awareness both through dialogue and through flexibly and accurately capturing visual representations of the client and their world. This may result in profoundly evocative awareness.
        • Cultivating learning and growth: Integrations of new thoughts, feeling and actions into clients’ worldviews, paths forward, celebrations, and future planning can all be visually captured.

Carla Yetter is a leadership development coach with a focus on mid-career professionals. Considering herself a ‘right-brained’ engineer, she combines her technical training, management and leadership experience with a love of visual expression to create a unique coaching experience.  By co-creating sketches, mind maps, and diagrams, individuals and teams can process complex ideas efficiently and gain new insights that are not available through words alone.  She started her work life as a chemical engineer. There she learned the power of diagrams and pictures to simplify complex manufacturing processes, foster understanding and accelerate problem solving. Throughout her career as a manager the power of pictures was equally effective for enabling individuals and teams to communicate effectively and generate shared vision. Today as a corporate executive she still reaches for a marker to help people “see” what they mean.

Improving Your Influence: When Empathy Informs Assertiveness

          CCEU: in progress

As professional coaches who utilize the framework of emotional intelligence to support our client's in reaching their goals, we notice a consistent struggle amongst our client-leaders to successfully balance empathy and assertiveness towards greater professional influence and advancement.

During this presentation we will explore the latest research on the topics of empathy and assertiveness and suggest new mental models for working with others. We will engage in group discussion to more clearly define both terms and learn how empathy and assertiveness when jointly employed exerts greater influence in any system.

          Learning outcomes:

          • Gain better working definitions
          • Better understand associated behaviors
          • Learn how empathy and assertiveness inform one another
          • Identify personal steps towards greater balance

          About the speakerS

Kelley Russell-DuVarney, MA, PCC, is an executive coach working in a variety of industries including higher education, healthcare, technology, government, and the non-profit space. She is trained as a certified positive psychology coach (CPPC), appreciative inquiry practitioner and she is a credentialed member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). She is certified to administer the EQ-i suite of individual and 360 assessments of emotional intelligence. Her background in sociology keeps her curious about the interplay of agency and structure and helps her to notice both institutional and self-imposed barriers to success. She served on her local ICF Board for four years and is now Past President of the Greater Austin Chapter. When she’s not coaching you will find her out for a run, volunteering in her community, spending time with friends, family and neighbors and traveling to explore new places. Originally a native New Englander from Massachusetts, Kelley, her husband, and two adult sons have called Austin, TX home for the past 20 years.

Many coaches find a niche - for Marilyn Orr, MA, CEC, PCC, that niche is emotional intelligence and resilience. She published “How Resilient Are Your Shocks?”, a practical workbook on increasing resilience and loves helping clients increase their capacity. Marilyn is the training partner for the world leader in emotional intelligence assessments, MHS, for South/Central Texas both completing assessments with clients and equipping other professionals to use the EQ-i 2.0 and EQ-i 360 tools. You might catch the odd word or phrase that lets you know Marilyn has Canadian roots (eh!). Marilyn and her husband Bill realized a long-held dream last year in the completion of their sustainable, modern wellness and event center in the Texas Hill Country.

          The Psychology Behind Bridgeable Gaps

          CCEU: in progress

A core skill for any coach is to motivate clients to achieve new goals. Psychological research suggests that this is best done by creating "bridgeable gaps." In this talk, I explore research on the role of gaps between the present and the future as creators of motivational energy. Then, I examine work on the importance of having a plan that will enable people to reduce that gap for driving people to act. Along the way, I will discuss the way that understanding emotions can help coaches to read the motivational states of their clients.
